The tragic shooting last month in Newtown, CT has left a heartbreaking impact on us all. With a cloud of politics and controversy overshadowing the innocent victims and their families, it can be hard to know how to compassionately express sympathy and condolence to those directly affected.

So, when I saw this Creative Allies call for entries for art to remember and honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, I was immediately inspired to create and contribute.

I’d participated in Creative Allies T-shirt design contests before, but this one isn’t a contest or a sale to profit from in anyway. It’s simply an open call for art dedicated to the young children and teachers who lost their lives in this senseless act of violence. Creative Allies will compile all submissions into a collage as a way to memorialize the victims in creative remembrance.

For my piece, I wanted to hand-letter the quote “In our arms for a little while, in our hearts forever.” I’d heard this quoted in interviews and articles surrounding the tragedy, and it stuck with me as a simple and beautiful statement of both sadness and comfort. The angel imagery represents all the innocent lost that day.

My heart goes out to all the families who lost an angel that day. They will always be remembered.
